Kettle Black is not an ordinary place. Designed by Studio You Me, the Kettle Black Cafe in Melbourne is a minimalist spot, tucked away in the last heritage terrace on Albert Road. Set right next to a skyscraper, the welcoming cafe is the perfect blend of classic and modern touches. Very impressive and minimal!
The setting is a clever mix of old and new, spread across a chichi Victorian terrace house and the ground floor of a shiny apartment complex in South Melbourne. Set right next to a skyscraper, the welcoming cafe combines the perfect blend of classic and modern touches. The light filled space is elegant and warm, authentic and hand crafted, with a genuine feel-good and friendly vibe. Sitting somewhere in between a cafe and a restaurant, the space almost creates it’s own new genre of venue.
The interior has a neutral palette of soft oak, hexagonal marble tiles, and brass finishes. The interior palette was carefully curated with warm finishes of soft oak timbers and polished concrete, offset by punchy mischievous green furniture and tiled walls. Small details, like brass hooks set against warm, organic linens, elevate everyday moments. The black steel crafted hanging waiter’s stations and communal tables add the tough edge, whilst the hexagonal marble tiles and brass detailing bring a refined elegance and luxury to the cafe.
The true beauty and innovation of this project is how the design slowly reveals itself with a series of vignettes within the interior – an ordinary concrete construction pipe transformed into an elegant brass lined water basin and so on. These theatrical moments celebrate the simplicity, elevating them into something truly beautiful and sculptural.
