A bungalow is a one-storied thatched or tiled house, usually surrounded by a veranda. The space is limited, but the designers usually consider it a huge challenge. This was also the case with the team from HAUS Architecture studio that accepted to transform a 1920s bungalow situated in Indianapolis, USA into a catchy, contemporary crib. The recipe was quite simple: mix old and new with style, and the result is fantastic: a bungalow remodel with an eclectic touch! For example, in the living room, two vibrant retro yellow sofas were paired with a new pallet coffee table on coasters. Several pillows with artistic prints bring a contemporary infusion into the space, while the knitted puffs recall the grandparents’ attic. The result? A cozy, familiar space where the cat feels at home too.
The master bedroom of the bungalow features an all-white palette on which wood could be introduced with charm. For example, the timber door that separates the sleeping area and the bathroom. It was borrowed from an old barn and it brings a tranquil rustic appeal inside.
The kitchen and the dining area share the same space, fully brighten by natural light. Rarely used for countertops, wood fits perfectly in the working surface, making the area look primitive and austere. Hot spots of colour – yellow chairs, red flowers, vibrant pictures – animate the field.
Some things have to be reminded while having a bath in an elegant, antique tube – duck, duck, goose written on the wall made me smile.
In the living room, exposed beams, bricks and a wooden ladder accentuate the rustic atmosphere. A large painting was exhibited on the fireplace and lots of pots with green plants enliven the bungalow.
