Built into the surrounding landscape, Retreat House by Architecture Brio offers peaceful living that is merged with nature. Located in Alibaug, near Mumbai in India, the house is built with a small stream running through the middle, with the wings of the house stretching out in various directions to make use of the surroundings. The house is made to weave around the landscape making full use of the views within the site and emphasizing particular instances: a beautiful tree or the cascading water of the monsoon rains. A multitude of medicinal and fruit bearing trees provide for an intimate ambiance and comfortable microclimate. Multiple rooms open up to the outdoors fusing internal and external spaces, offering a sense of relaxation at Retreat House. A short walk along the stream before entering the house domain builds up a sense of anticipation.
Split into two parts, one side houses the main daytime living areas, while the master bedroom is separated via a small bridge that spans the stream running through the house. Constructed from a stark concrete that attracts a patina over time in the humid Indian climate, it is contrasted with white interiors that are flooded with light from carefully positioned sunlight.
