Designed by Oz Architects in 2002, this beautiful project is known for incorporating antique and reclaimed building materials. The project features wonderfully warm interior spaces, and equally inviting exterior spaces arranged to extend those interior spaces into Paradise Valley’s wonderful climate. Antique and reclaimed materials were used inside and out, ranging from wood beams and terra cotta roof tile imported from France, to domestically sourced reclaimed wood decking used for ceilings and roof overhangs. The overall impression of the home is meant to convey a general Mediterranean flavor, drawing upon multiple idioms, with none predominating. Ceiling heights carefully relate to room scale in every instance, varying accordingly to the disposition of the rooms within the overall floor plan. This beautiful project, often photographed and frequently published, was, by great fortune, the first residential project of any sort Gene had worked on during his career, and firmly set his aspirations for well-conceived and well-executed residential design.
