Realized by Sanjay Puri Architects, the Courtyard House is located at the edge of a cement plant in Rajasthan, India. Designed in response to a climate with long summer months of 450C average temperature, the house is composed of organically radiating concrete volumes of varied proportions that create sculpted series of spaces in the house. Each room is oriented to capture the changing landscape on either side, through openings in the spaces that form transitional areas between the interior and the exterior. This aspect together with the presence of large landscaped courtyards, the lower outdoor patio and deeply recessed windows create a house that is much cooler inside than outside, making it extremely energy efficient. Several guest rooms are located along a lower patio, both connected by an open corridor.
