Clearly articulated shapes, white boxes, concrete elements and symmetrical compositions. This seems to be the philosophy of the Coolum Bays Beach House designed by Aboda Design Group in Queensland, Australia. Following a modern aesthetic, the house achieves contrast between the upper elements and the glass door at the entrance, counterpointed by the heaviness and solidity of the concrete boxes and feature tiled external walls. To the northern elevation, the composition is more dynamic, projecting from the hillside out towards the Bays. As you can easily notice from the pictures below, lightness is achieved with the large format glazing, including sashless windows, the square cutouts in the deck roof and the weightless appearance of the pool, many metres above natural ground level. The aesthetic appeal, whist unconventional, has garnered admirers locally, who believe it captures a refined and elegant beach lifestyle without being derivative of past methods of creating the typical ‘beach house’.
