New zealand-based Fearon Hay Architects have created the ‘island retreat’ seated within a protective saddle facing Hauraki Bay. The environment of WaihekeIsland can be idyllic, but also inhospitable with exposure to northerlies and south westerlies of the Hauraki Gulf. The natural undulations of the saddle have been subtly emphasized to form a protective setting for three structures, a pool and the open spaces between.
The natural undulations of the saddle have been subtly emphasized to form a natural setting for three roofed structures and freestanding raised pool. Draped roof planes are tensioned to the surrounding landscape over interior and exterior spaces. This private getaway residence is broken up into individual free-standing structures that serve separate functions containing a living area, studio, bedroom, swimming pool and central courtyard, each with their own isolated mechanical systems. A steel frame supports the roof embedded in concrete, tensioned to the ground with exposed cables, reminiscent of a tent assembly. Combined with varied stones and timber has produced a series of open interior spaces which are very warm and cozy. The same palette of calm, muted tones is used throughout and complemented with various textures, textiles and splashes of designer luxury.
