As a hospitable host, it’s your duty to make your guests comfortable during their stay in your home. You have to make them feel relaxed and at home as a courtesy to offering shelter.
As such, having an appealing guest room is one of the most important things you should do for your guests. You have to ensure they not only sleep soundly but also love how their room looks.
However, spending a lot of money for a room that isn’t going to be used often may not be on everyone’s budget. Hence, the tips I’m going to share include affordable upgrades that will make your guest rooms more appealing to visitors.
Having a Nice Mattress is a Must
How would you feel if you lay down in a bed that’s either too hard or too soft for your comfort? Not good, right? Sure, a high-quality mattress is a bit expensive, but your guests will hate staying in your home if you don’t at least give them a nice bed.
Your guests will be lying down for 8 hours or more in that bed. Hence, you want them to be able to sleep comfortably and not have any back pains when they wake up.
Install an Air Conditioning Unit
One of the easiest ways to make your guests feel more comfortable is to install air conditioning units in your guest room. Individuals have different preferences in temperature, hence, giving them access to the controls is necessary.
If you have a centralized air conditioning system, make sure the guest rooms have their own control panel. Some guests may feel reluctant to ask you to change the temperature and so they will try to endure whatever temperature you have set.
If you don’t have an air conditioning unit installed in the guest room, install one. Be sure that the size of the air conditioner is just right for the size of the room.
If you’re unsure how to select the right size, contact the experts and have them recommend and install the perfect air conditioner for you.
Add Warm Light
Some people may feel uncomfortable sleeping in a totally dark room. However, leaving the white lights open may disrupt sleep because of the blue light.
The solution? Warm lights. Replace some bulbs with yellow lights to give your guest an option to turn on the lights without the sleep-disrupting effects of bright white lights.
If you have no bulbs to replace, you can get the same lighting from a bedside lamp.
Update the Wall Paint
If it has been a while since the guest room received some care, consider repainting the room with a more relaxing colour at least 2 weeks before your guests arrive.
Go for neutral colours that give out a warm vibe. Some of our favourite colours are light brown, grey, beige, navy blue, and olive green.
If you want the job to be done right and on time, consider hiring a local painting service. By using an experienced team of professionals, you can ensure that the walls are painted before your guests arrive and can ensure the quality of the work is top-of-the-line.
Give Your Guest a Work Table
Your guests, especially those who are working, will appreciate it very much if you put a working table in their bedroom.
Although having them work in the living room is fine, some guests prefer to work and receive calls privately. Hence, a small desk and a chair will go a long way in making your guests feel special.
Put Plants in the Room
You may have a few indoor plants in your living room or in your garden that would look perfect in the guest room. If so, put them in the guest room temporarily.
Plants make any dull room more relaxing and they will help keep the fresh air in the room. A few plants we recommend are:
- Snake plant
- Golden Pothos
- English Ivy
- Rubber Plant
- Spider Plant
- Peace Lily
Your guests will surely appreciate the effort you put in to make them feel more relaxed.
Incorporate Decorative Features
Just because the guest rooms are not used much often doesn’t mean they don’t deserve some decorations.
Make your guest room beautiful by adding figurines, paintings, ambient lighting, and other decorative pieces. That way, you make your guests feel like guests and not just someone you give the spare room to.
Clean It the Day Before Your Guests Arrive
You might’ve cleaned your guest room a few weeks ago, but because guest rooms aren’t used often, they will gather dust quickly.
A day or two before the guests arrive, give their room a thorough cleaning. Make sure the sheets are changed and the floors swept.
But don’t stop in the room, clean the bathrooms too. Use chemicals to get rid of hard water stains and moulds that may have gathered. Also, turn on the faucets for a few seconds to fill the P-trap with water and get rid of the funky smell.
When the drains haven’t been filled with water, the water in the P-trap that is blocking the smell from the sewer may evaporate leaving the P-trap empty and the sewer odours free to come out.
Final Thoughts
Offering a guest room for your visitors to stay in may feel like being hospitable enough, however, going the extra mile by making their temporary bedrooms feel like home can go a long way.
Being a truly hospitable host might take a little bit of effort, but doing so will make your visitors appreciate you and will be more likely to return the favour.
If you’re ready to be a hospitable host, follow these tips and make your guest room more appealing.
