Whether you have just a couple of hours, the odd afternoon, or a day or two to spare, make the most of your weekend by trialling one or more of these easy DIY projects.
1. Paint your gate/front door
You’d be surprised at how much a lick of paint can do to the exterior of your house. But don’t just take our word for it, get the paints out and give it a try yourself!
2. Line your cabinet with colourful paper
Another easy project, lining your cabinets or dressers with wallpaper or other colourful paper will create a beautiful backdrop for displaying your favourite pieces.
3. Create a feature wall
Commonly used in bedrooms, but great for any type of room, feature walls create a nice contrast to otherwise plain rooms. Paint an entire wall a funky colour or opt for something a little different by painting a contrasting-coloured circle to echo the shape of a round dining table, for example.
4. Create a DIY coffee station
If your wallet is suffering from too many last-minute latte stops, this is the perfect project for you. After you’ve sanded your wood and sprayed it with lacquer, put the pieces together and make sure the shelf is at a 90-degree angle. Now add mug hooks under the station and voila!
5. Build your own bookshelves
Believe it or not, creating more storage space doesn’t have to be extremely time consuming. Grab yourself some decent wood, a cordless drill and some sanding paper, and you’re good to go. (There are tons of online tutorials if you want more details about this project.)
6. Install your own backsplash
Removable tiles are an easy way to transform your space and don’t take much time at all. Bonus point – peel and stick tiles are removable so you can take them out when you leave a rental or when you want to change your kitchen again.
7. Build your own fire pit
This one sounds a lot more daunting than it is, trust us. All you need to do is obtain some concrete wall blocks, a bag of pebbles, a pewter base, and some help from an online tutorial or an expert.
8. Make your own terrariums
A fun DIY project for this weekend and a way to bring the outdoors in. Simply fill some apothecary jars with pebbles and add the succulents of your choice. This may not take the entire weekend, but it’s definitely a fun way to spend a couple of hours in the afternoon.
9. Redo your bathroom floors
Rather than ripping out your old tiles, you can give your bathroom floor a new look with some floor paint and, if you’re feeling brave, a graphic stencil.
10. Paint your own mid-century style art
The beauty of mid-century styled art is that it involves simple shapes and clean lines only, making it an easy and fun DIY project.
As you can see, DIY doesn’t have to mean a long, complicated project that gets left half finished! Keeping it simple is always the way forward, especially when you only have a weekend to spare. With these 10 easy DIY projects, you can take the first steps towards renovating your home in no time at all.
