High-end luxury isn’t exactly what comes to mind when most people think of mobile homes. But if you think trailer homes are low cost and low on style, there are some exclusive mobile home communities that will melt any preconceived notions of this humblest of home options. These are the million-dollar mobile homes you can never buy – unless you’ll win the lottery.
From trailer homes to modern mobile houses
Mobile homes (or manufactured as they are known in the industry) are prefabricated structures built in a factory and then transported to their permanent location. Although they share the same historic origins as travel trailers, there are huge differences in size and furnishings between them.
They originated in the 1950’s as a form of inexpensive housing and have long been cast aside as a housing choice of last resort. But as the time went on, trailer houses became better built, larger and more inviting. Today’s manufactured homes bear little resemblance to the tiny trailer homes of history. They’re spacious and come equipped with top-of-the-line amenities and features.
In cities across the world, the modern mobile homes put a whole new spin on the trailer park term. The myths about the trailer parks move further from the truth as the ugly ducklings are transformed into swans.
Luxury mobile homes you can never buy
Forget practicality and real life for a moment and think about your dream home. Can’t quite picture it in a trailer park? Well, let’s take a spin through our selection of stunning luxury mobile homes from around the world. They will overthrow your expectations of the traditional trope.
1. Forest Lodge / PAD studio
This contemporary trailer home is located in New Forest, Hampshire, England and is effectively genre-defying. The pre-fabricated home was built off site and craned into position in two pieces in order to comply with planning regulations that limited what could be built in an English forest. This means it can also be removed in the same way at a later date.
2. Retreat in Finca Aguy / MAPA
This mobile home was prefab-born in a factory near Montevideo and transported 200km by lorry to its destination – a picturesque olive grove surrounded by rolling hills. The house is made up of two identical modules, each approximately 12.5 metres long.
3. The Cocoon Cabin
480 square feet may not sound like much, but with smart storage options and floor-to-ceiling windows, the home feels larger than it is. The dwelling is described as a “plug-and-play house with the sophisticated features of a custom home or luxe resort”. It uses a mix of bamboo, wood, matte laquer, and bronze finishes.
4. Vipp Shelter
Danish retailer Vipp has created a factory-made, metal-and-glass micro dwelling called the Shelter. This prefabricated, 55 square meter structure is designed to be placed in the natural setting of your choice with minimal effort on your part. So much so that the dwelling even comes filled with the company’s line of homeware products.
5. Escape Mobile Cabin
It might be called “mobile”, but this isn’t some shack on wheels. Technically classified as a Park Model RV, this is 400-square-foot cabin-on-wheels. Although the little home takes its cues from the standard park model recreational vehicle (RV), it doesn’t suffer from the standard claustrophobic interiors. The one bedroom cabin comes complete with fireplace, full kitchen, glass wall, walk-in shower and a screened porch to admire your surroundings.
Whether you’ve seriously considered trailer homes or you want just to entertain the fantasy, we hope our collection with 5 of the most beautiful mobile homes has changed your opinion about these iconic houses.
