The Olivia Balmes Hotel, reflects the refined, cosmopolitan image that Barcelona aims to convey to its visitors. The architect Alex Ibañez designed the façade, which is both elegant and contemporary and fits into the historical surroundings of Carrer de Balmes. Riu collaborated with the architect Andrea Ominetti from GCA on this project and, as he explains, “right from the entrance, visually the hotel comes across as a unit, made up of commons areas, circulation areas and rest areas. Based on this spatial continuity, we have established varying degrees of privacy within the interior spaces, using a very limited range of materials, tones and resources which give the project its character. Their objective was to create an understated, cosmopolitan, contemporary hotel that will stand the test of time, with a particular focus on cost-effectiveness both in terms of construction and subsequent maintenance.
