Located in Brighton, Melbourne, Australia, this contemporary single family house was designed by Max Architects and Minka Interiors. The geometric forms of the house are bold and unprecedented in its immediate surrounds. Built in a largely conservative setting within a street-scape comprising a mixture of traditional period homes and recent replica house styles, this design is unashamedly contemporary with a sculptural edge. Open and enclosed spaces are overlapped in a living program that pays tribute to functionality and relaxed living: “On the lower floor, we have the living room. With a large veranda, all of the window frames can be entirely recessed. Simple, practical and bright spaces were given character with color, texture and patterns. The living room then becomes an open space, protected by a large flat pre-stressed slab. The kitchen is joined to this social area, facing the dining room and contained within a wooden volume that also holds a small utility area and a washroom.”
The underlying design criteria for this house was that it was to be a long-term family home which would be passed down through generations. As such, both the design and construction needed to endure the test of time and passing fads. The interiors are kept minimal yet warm incorporating strong sculptural forms, woven within various key spaces so as to provide an integrated theme throughout the building. Custom laser-cut steel screens clad the external glazing and are featured in various prominent locations throughout the home.
Inside the house, an elegant atmosphere reigns as spaces flow from one into the next. Light and airy, dotted with color here and there, this is how the interiors of this contemporary single family house in Melbourne, Australia present themselves through the lens of photographer Minka Interiors. How would you comment on this house design, regarding its relationship to the local architecture?
