3. Cedar Wood Clad Cozy Country House by Turnbull Griffin Haesloop Architects
Designed for two graphic designers, this house bridges between two stands of redwood trees, with the northern window wall facing out to the expansive view. Turnbull Griffin Haesloop Architects designed the Sebastopol Residence located in Sebastopol, California. This 1,700 square foot contemporary country house was completed in 2008. The exterior of this house is clad in cedar wood and has a warm interior with predominantly wooden ceiling, wall and flooring.
4. Tropical Modern House Inspired by Temples and Traditional Palaces
Located on the big island, this tropical modern house has been decorated by Olson Kundig Architects in a modern Balinese style. Inspired by temples and traditional palaces, this tropical modern house sits on a beautiful promontory, with tropical design concepts, match were used to fit the house naturally into its setting. The design of this tropical modern house is fully submerged the Indonesian theme, including décor, furnishings and artefacts.
5. Beautiful Guest House Rivendell by IDMM Architects, South Korea
Designed by IDMM Architects, this house is located in Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. Relationships between the building’s layout and the land upon which it stands, and the way in which it fits in among the buildings around it are to be interrogated. The Guesthouse Rivendell sits on a plot that measures 3300sqm, a size rather large for a house. The architect has been careful, therefore, to position the structures so as to avoid making the house look too small and the leaving the rest of the site looking like a desert. Add a sunny garden to get to a decked roof, a pool and some sharp angles, and this project by IDMM Architects, might just be the most awesome design we’ve seen in a long time.
6. Hampton Residence by Finnis Architects, Melbourne, Australia
Located in Melbourne, Australia, Finnis Architects has completed Hampton Residence, a stylish residential project combining open plan living and entertaining zones with private family spaces. The newly constructed three bedroom home combines open plan living with privacy and luxury. The main living areas on the ground floor seamlessly flow through to the outside. The house had a major focus on entertaining with the house containing multiple social areas.
7. Long Island Retreat by West Chin Architects
It’s what every house aspires to be: “A place one would never want to leave,” which is how judge Sherrill Canet responds to this residence by West Chin Architect. Like some magical structure plopped mysteriously at the shore, the house appears to float above the ground while simultaneously sloping toward the ocean, so that even the most deeply recessed rooms have an unobstructed view. Indeed, it’s sometimes difficult to tell whether you’re indoors or out, particularly when the 26-foot-wide hangar door is opened to the elements. Not just statement-making, the house comprises environmentally sensitive materials like laminated lumber and solar roof panels. The latter efficiently collect, radiate, and disperse heat, but judge Scott Sanders insists that the house is “very cool.”
8. Amazing Dream Home: Edge House by Studio B
The Edge House was designed by architect Scott Lindenau and his team at Studio B Architects. The design team showed off their talents by creating a unique U-form style for this 10,000 sf residence. The program consists of a public zone, private wing, modern indoor swimming pool, and service wing. A wood ceiling and floor panels, along with a white wall interior create a large living area. Guests of this dream home enjoy a 270 degree view and ample sun. A bridge-like stairway links the home’s public and private wings, and the additionally the home’s entry opens to a sculpture garden, reflecting pool, and morning sunlight.
9. Brewer House by Sarah Scott Architects
Situated on the shores of Lake Wanaka, in Queenstown, New Zealand, this amazing modern residence was designed in 2012 by Sarah Scott Architects. The site is located on Roy’s Peninsula on the shores of Lake Wanaka approximately 15km North of Wanaka.
10. Burkehill Residence by Craig Chevalier and Raven Inside Interior Design
Vancouver-based studio Craig Chevalier completed the Burkehill Residence in collaboration with interior designer Claudia Leccacorvi, principal of Raven Inside Interior Design. Built in 2012 and sold for $7.3 million, this four bedroom, five bathroom contemporary home is located in West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The 7,000 square foot house features large principle rooms, high ceilings, extensive Indiana limestone and expansive glass to reinfore true indoor/ outdoor living.
