Designed by Robert Maschke Architects, this was is located in a densely wooded perimeter provides privacy from the compact suburban neighborhood. The client wished to maintain the quaint cottage style of the existing century old shake clad structure while enhancing it with open interior spaces filled with natural light. A new master suite, gallery, and indoor/outdoor entertaining spaces supplement the existing program.
The difference between exterior and interior is apparent, with large open spaces that include a new master suite, gallery, and indoor/outdoor entertainment areas, all flooded with natural night to create an abundance of energizing space. From the street, a windowless living façade also camouflages the addition’s massing to increase privacy for many of the rooms within. The internal environment is also characterized by layered views that create subtle connections to the exterior. Roofs and facades clad in wood shake, standing seam metal, and vegetated surfaces on the other hand, fold together to blur the distinctions between the new and existing aspects of the cottage. The addition also serves to create courtyard spaces at multiple levels, while the folding roof creates a dynamic vaulted interior space.
